I am trying to repair this broken capacitor to recover this dme. Only problem is that the capacitor has three legs but I see two legs of that original capacitor are soldered on the same plate.

If I used a two leg capacitor, would it work? Any ideas? I am told the three leg capacitor is just so that the component sits tight. Ill solder the two leg minding orientation and test.

Yes, third is for stabilization. You can use a normal capacitor, it will work.

I got a capacitor and fixed it but still no start. The capacitor I used was smaller in size but same voltage and same 470uF. Maybe something else is damaged or wrong capacitor size? Investigating further.

In most cases, if a capacitor is swollen or exploded, it means excessive voltage or excessive temperature. I'd bet on first assumption, wich means other component/s is/are damaged, like an resistor or a semiconductor (diode/transistor).

In my case I was opening the dme and one of the smaller capacitors was pulled out. Replaced it with same electrical voltage and capacitance capacitor but smaller in physical size and two leg instead of three.

I recall trying to start car with it without the capacitor. I hope that did not fry something else!!
